Ah, the Rolling Stones. My Favorite rock band of all time? Bisa jadi. Pertanyaan ini sebenernya cukup membingungkan sih. But, The Rolling Stones tentu aja ada di top 3 greatest band of all time buat gue. Apa alasannya? Simple. SOUL.

Comparing to all the greats yang ada di jaman mereka, Beatles, Velvet, Doors, or even Kinks, Stones music kerasa lebih RAW, berani, tapi lebih jelas. But yang kerasa buat gua, lebih soulful daripada band-band diatas. That’s why nyoba masuk ke dalam discography mereka itu jauh lebih susah daripada nenggelemin diri ke dalam band-band diatas. The only artist yang gua bilang lebih susah buat dimasukin itu Bowie and Zappa, but that’s the weird thing about Stones, music mereka jauh lebih easy, pop-ish, less experimentalist daripada Bowie and Zappa, tapi kenapa susah bener buat dimasukin? Because they’re playing with heart and soul. Susah buat mengenal seseorang, atau sebuah BAND lebih dalam, ketika mereka meluangkan isi hati mereka dan meminta kita buat masuk ke dalam cerita, angan, dan dunia mereka. I don’t know why, setiap kali dengerin lagu2 mereka, rasanya ada adrenalin shot atau semacem hormon cowo and COOL groove yang masuk ke dalam feeling gua, enough sampe seandainya gua punya duit, gua mungkin mau buka bar dengan lagu2 Rolling Stones mainly as the songs of the bar. Imagine listening to Wild Horses sambil drink bourbon while having some fuck thing going on in your head. FUCK, kedengeran pretentious banget penjelasan gua. Whatever. I fuckin hate Jagger voice and the lyrics of this song. Matiin the vocal and lu bakal nemuin lagu rolling stones paling romantis yang pernah ada. Cocok banget buat jadi lagu klimaks di film2 romantis yang bermutu dan gak murah. Fuckin tender..

16. Rough Justice

“Once upon a time I was your little rooster, But now I’m just one of your cocks”, yes, itu lirik yang bikin gua langsung dengerin dan fall in love with Rough Justice. I frickin love this song. Gak terlalu sering gua puter, but everytime this song is on, I love it. Lagu Stones paling modern di list ini rasanya classic banget. Its like rough raw rock yang udah gak ada lagi di jaman sekarang. Loud and Clear.

15. 2000 Man

Confessions, gua tau lagu ini dari discog-nya Kiss. Dari dulu gua selalu curiga, gak mungkin band kaya kiss bisa bikin lagu dengan lirik kaya 2000 man, and like always, gua bener. Transisi dari verse pertama ke chorus yang totally different is my favorite part of this song.

14. Start me up

Spread the fuckin oil and the gasoline setiap kali Rolling Stones playing this song. Cuma stones yang bisa bikin lagu se-smooth dan selicin ini walo kedengerannya simple banget.

13. Fool to Cry

I always love black and blue(not the backstreet boys album). Salah satu album Stones paling underrated menurut gua. And fools to Cry is the best song of that album. It is sweet, gentle, and goddamn, that awesome falsetto always wins me over. Lebih kerasa kaya lagu soul daripada lagu rock buat gua.

12. Miss You

Whatever you do, do not listen to the stupid disco version of this great song.

11. Under My Thumb

Buat ukuran lagunya stones, Under my Thumb is a weird song. Di luar riffnya Richard, the song gak kedengeran kaya lagu2nya Stones di era itu, at least for me. And the lyrics, oh the lyrics. Kalo gua suka, entar gua dibilang misogist…

Agree with the Rolling stones magazines, sometime, a good song is a good song. Beast of Burden itu contohnya. Gak perlu analisis dalem2 buat tau kalo this song is good even from the very first time I’ve listened to it.

Satu dari dua lagu Stones yang rasanya personal banget buat gua. Every single time this song is on, reminded me of something in the past yang entah kenapa selalu jadi beban di otak gua, but the weird thing is, i dont know what the fuck is that.

07. Tumbling Dice

Ni lagu rasa2nya mirip ama Beast of Burden, cuma lebih advance, irregular and awesome. Ada rasa2 countrynya dikit2, tapi mungkin itu gara2 liriknya. Very groovy song.

06. Gimme Shelter

This dark, bleak and anti-war song rasanya elegant banget buat gua. Listening to this song make you feel like a badass yang berada di jaman yang salah.

05. Loving Cup

Lagu ini pas banget kalo dijadiin lagu gospel. Dari liriknya, feelingnya, sampai melodi pianonya yang saloon based but smells like a river, ngalun banget, and freakin addictive. Salah satu lagu yang sering gua jadiin pengingat buat diri gua untuk selalu merendah dan berhenti being an asshole, which after 5 minutes, ilang lagi tu perasaan kemakan harga diri gua yang tinggi gila.

04. Paint it Black

TOUR OF DUTY! This is the darkest Stones song menurut gua. It feels and sounded like a war yang digabungin ama semacem cult of personality yang gelap dan penuh ama darah. Totally appropriate banget buat dijadiin lagu creditnya Devil’s Advocate. Amazing song!

03. You cant always get what you want

This is my eulogy song. Seandainya gua die, i want this song as a funeral song buat semacem pesta pemakaman gua. My wife already know about this. Why? Because this song is what life is all about. None other musician in this world yang bisa ngegambarin jalannya roda kehidupan lebih keren, elegan, and fuckup, lebih bagus daripada apa yang Stones do with this song. I will always remember the asshole hank moody drivin to the sunset in the greatest moment of TV History. They should’ve ended the series right then. Well, you cant always get what you want!!

02. Sympathy for the Devil

Dari awal ampe akhir, this song feels like a train that going through a jungle yang penuh ama lyrical sok devilish, luciferish yang kerasa banget jadi semacem mockery for everything yang bikin society takut ama something yang bahkan eksistensinya gak ada. Its just like jagger saying to people, So, If i’m singing about the devil, that makes me a devil? So if something funny happened when I’m Singing this song that makes this song is a homage to the devil? ITS JUST A FUCKING SONG. A GREAT MAGNIFICENT ROCK SONG WITH A GLOORIOUS and AMAZING GUITAR SOLO in the end.

01. Can’t you Hear me Knocking

Jarang banget lagu yang dari detik pertama, uda langsung bisa gue moving my head and ngegelitik jiwa rock and roll gue nun jauh in my black hole heart. But that’s what Keith Richard did with this song. The intro riff gitarnya bisa make you feel the soul of frickin classic rock and roll banget squezzing out from your life. Fuckin Beatles can’t do this kind of masterpiece and music. They don’t have the passion and the guts to do it. And then come the Slow Jam at the end. No offence to Mick Jagger yang tugasnya uda abis di menit ke 3, but the last 4 minutes is feels like heaven for rock fans. The Saxophone, the conga, and then the godly Taylor guitar solo yang unscripted. This is music at its best
