Udah 3 taon berlalu sejak gue bikin list yang sama, walo waktu itu gue tulisnya 500 sih. Presiden udah ganti. Interstellar turns out to be sucks. Jadi ya saatnya ubah list juga. Tadinya gue mau nulis 1000 lagu favorit gue, but damn, kayanya bakal panjang banget, padahal gue pengen ngebahas secara lengkap juga. But as always, just like goyangan lebih penting daripada size, soul lebih penting daripada skill, quality tentu aja lebih penting daripada kuantiti. Jadi gue decided, ya udah gue pilih aja 30 supaya gue bisa bahas lebih dalem. Dan gue rasa juga bakalan lebih gampang juga buat ditulis.

Milih 30 lagu favorit gue sepanjang masa itu susah banget. Sesusah naklukin mantan gue and convinced her to love the fuck out of the asshole of me puluhan tahon lalu di SMU. WHY? because buat gue, music itu salah satu bagian dari MY RELIGION. My holy trinity of life is Movie, Music, and Experience. YES! I’m that fool. The one that Noel talk about putting their lives up in a rock band in Don’t LOOK back in Anger. So in away, bikin list ini sejenis sama seandainya para creationist putting out their 31 favorite verse in their Holy Bible.

30. BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE – WORLD SICK

If you listened to this song, elu bisa nangkep banget kalo ini mirip banget ama lagu2nya Arcade Fire. So why the hell gak ada satupun lagu ARCADE FIRE di list ini? Gue sendiri bingung kalo ditanya gitu. The heart wants what it wants(gue mestinya bunuh diri aja after using that cheap and stupid reference). World sick is a good song. Good kayanya terlalu humble, great is more likely. To tell you the truth, gue lebih banyak lebih suka lagu2nya Arcade Daripada BSS.  Arcade as a band jauh lebih keren daripada BSS yang just DECENT. But world sick is different. For a bunch of guys yang gak setalented grombloan AF, this is song is quite amazing. The progression and sense of journey. The Lyrics. The Soul. And a very very good ending.

29. PINK FLYOD – SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMONDS , PTS 1-5

Setiap kali dengerin lagu ini ye, gak tau kenapa perasaan gue tuh rasanya kaya lagi sedang masukin tendanya native american gitu, terus disodorin their kind of weed dan terus terbang bareng2 gitu ke alam penuh imajinasi dimana ada planet terbuat dari diamond dan gue ngelangkah ngelompat2 maenin gravitasi disono. Damn, this is one hell of a song. I always like Wish you Were Here daripada The Dark Side of the Moon. WYWH lebih conherent aja. Gara2 ini lagu. Just listen to this song. I’m not a big fan of progressive rock. Never. Tapi gue gak bisa resist ni lagu. Dengerin deh part IIInya. Itu si wright tuh uda kaya BB King in Jazz mode. And Part IV, damn. I’m out of words.

28. MARVIN GAYE – INNER CITY BLUES

Di detik2 terakhir, I swap Trouble Man for this song. Marvin probably the only motown artist yang bisa nempatin dark and bleak dengan rhythm yang rasanya masih soulful and bleak. Dan kerennya that feeling bisa dicapai lewat intonasi music dan lyrics yang sebenernya agak2 ngaco dan terlalu “blues”. Dengerin aja ni lagu.

27. MUSE – KNIGHT OF CYDONIA

I fuckin hate Muse. It is one of those band yang kedengerannya tuh advance bener pertama2 lu denger, but as time goes by, kok lama2 rasanya shallow dan gitu2 doang aja ye. But knights of Cydonia is another case. This is the perfect song anthem when you are going to war. The perfect song when you know that you are going to fucking up someone(or yourself tonight). Its like gotta fly now for millenium. But more badass dan keras.

26. GUNS N ROSES – WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE

Welcome to the jungle probably the only rock song yang bisa ngegambarin something yang very very raw, energetic, crude magnetism and sexual tanpa kehilangan jiwa rocking badass yang kasar dan powerful. Just listen to the Slash guitar and Axl Voice disaat mereka masih jaya-jayanya. Say what you want about axl and how lame he became jaman sekarang, There’s nothing like GUNS N ROSES when they’re at the top, probably even now. The swag, the badass rockstar(not self proclaimed) charisma, the dirtiness.

25. BLUR – UNDER THE WESTWAY

Under the Westway reminds me to “To The End”, or “The Universal”, dua songs dari Blur yang gak kedengeran kaya hasil karya britpop band. It’s more matured and round though. Gak kaya dua lagu taon 90an itu yang keliatan mencoba berbeda, Under the Westway felt more soulful dan quiet. Disaat albarn shouting out words “Hallelujah” with that broken and pessimistic tone, I feel him.

24. JAI PAUL – JASMINE

Dari pertama kali Jasmine masuk ke otak gue, I know ni lagu bakalan bertengger entah sampai kapan di imajinasi gue dan bakalan selalu gue denger for at least 1 time in a week for the rest of my life. As one of the most hipsterish song yang pernah gue denger, this harrowing track bisa bikin elu nyasar dalem banget nyoba nangkep all the groove, funk, and great great falsetto in it. Dan kerennya ya, walo It is sounded Nu Disco-y, it doesn’t feel like Nu-Disco. It feels like an amazing pop track. That’s how damn good Jasmine is..

23. LIVING COLOURS – CULT OF PERSONALITY

Gue akuin, walo gue uda tau lagu ini entah dari kapan, CM PUNK yang bikin gue nempatin ni lagu ada di list ini. Hell, saking sukanya gue ama lagu ini, gue bahkan sempet pengen jadiin ni lagu jadi my wedding entrance, sayangnya di veto ama calon bini. CULT OF PERSONALITY is awesome. Energetic banget tapi ga lebay ampe bikin elu jingkrak2. Intro gitarnya mirip2 kaya 18 kaleng Red bull yang nampol elu langsung di muka tanpa perlu turun dolo ke usus elu. Apa lagi yang elu butuhin buat masukin sebuah lagu ke dalem great category coba? Butuh sampe ada Mussolini, Kennedy, Stalin, and Gandhi ngebacot juga?

22. THE ROLLING STONES – SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL

Di list lama gue, lagu ini ada di nomor satu. So how come the mighty bisa fallen begini jauh? Gak ada alasan spesifik sih. Mungkin gue grow bored aja. But don’t get me wrong, this is still one hell of a track. Dari awal ampe akhir, it feels like a train that going through a jungle yang penuh ama lyrical sok devilish, luciferish yang kerasa banget jadi semacem mockery for everything yang bikin society takut ama something yang bahkan eksistensinya gak ada. Its just like jagger saying to people, So, If i’m singing about the devil, that makes me a devil? So if something funny happened when I’m Singing this song that makes this song is a homage to the devil? ITS JUST A FUCKING SONG. A GREAT MAGNIFICENT ROCK SONG WITH A GLOORIOUS and AMAZING GUITAR SOLO in the end.

21. JIMI HENDRIX – THE WIND CRIES MARY

Kalo dipikir2, ni lagu sebenernya isinya cuma si Jimi ngeranting and ngomong about whatever it is yang ada di otak dia pas nulis. Random banget wordsnya. Tapi in terms of musicality, tiap kali dengerin ni lagu, bawaan gue pengen matiin lampu, nyalain lilin, ngendok sambil ngebul.

20. THE COMMODORES – EASY

Damn. Look at Lionel Richie’s hair. That’s swag. Gunain deh lagu ini setiap bangun pagi di hari minggu. This song is like the best representative buat motown era/music. Black and pop banget without sacrificing soul. That piano intro is so goddamn good making me just can’t stand the pain..

19. SKY FERREIRA – EVERYTHING IS EMBARRASSING

Everything is embarrassing itu simple banget, sampe kadang2 bisa bikin gue mikir , “How come a song that’s so simple and sounded too vintage or 80’s edgy, that should not work for me, bikin gw terus2an dengerin and trying so goddamn hard to find some weird euphemism or metaphorical in the lyrics padahal gw tau that doesn’t exist?”. Everything is Embarassing bener2 gak ada sisi commercialnya. Its like a diary from Sky yang felt so personal dan seakan2 ngegambarin kalo ini yang dia mau dan suka in Music. I feel that. Everything is Embarassing is still a pop, walo lebih ngarah ke kiri. Vulnerable and full of soul. That’s one hell of ingredient combination to become one of my greatest pop track of all time. Siapa yang duga kalo Pop can be an art too? And that’s coming out from my mouth…

18. WHITESNAKE – HERE I GO AGAIN

HA! Talk about guilty pleasure. Ini lagu probably the dumbest one and the shallowest one in this list, but damn, ini lagu juga jadi salah satu yang paling nikmat banget buat dinyanyiin rame2 dan pake baju pas siap2 ngantor or whatever you do that day. Strip away all the technicality, penilaian2 objektif sok kritikus, and all those bullshit, HERE I GO AGAIN is an amazing 80’s rock yang timeless dan ngena banget nada dan artinya. Lagu nomor satu yang rasanya perfect banget kalo elu ada di dalem strip club yang isi lagu2nya glam rock macem poison, def leppard, or even Van Halen(Let the war begin..) ngerenungin nasib yang gak kunjung berubah and questioning all the reason kenapa elu selalu sendirian and finally wake up and saying FUCK THIS WORLD!

17. SUEDE – THE WILD ONES

Ah, the magnum opus of Suede(Off course it is! Ini lagu satu2nya dimana Buttler ama Oakes kerja bareng!). The Bitter Sweet Symphony, The Smells Like Teen Spirits, The Enter the Sandman. Sebagai lagu favoritnya Suede sendiri(Brett admits it), The Wild Ones emang yang paling penuh jiwa dan pendalaman. Every single time Brett sings with his majestic falsetto, “We’ll be the wild ones…”, they really take it to their heart that they’re are the wild ones that running with the dogs today. Jujur aja, gw stunned pertama kali dengerin lagu ini. Too beautiful, too fragile and too much pain to listened. Yang lagi putus, stay the fuck away from this song..

16. THE WHITE STRIPES – I JUST DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF

The original song by Dusty Springfield actually is an amazing song by itself. But the white stripes manages to turn it up couple of notch and changing it into a godly rock song yang pas banget buat nemenin elu banting2 all that gadget and crap kalo elu udah kesel ama everything. Lebay.

15. OASIS – SLIDE AWAY

Why Slide away? Kenapa gak Champagne Supernova? Don’t Look back in Anger? or even Underneath the Sky? Because Slide Away itu menurut gue satu2nya lagu Love Song-nya Oasis yang coherent, unpretentious dan sounded kaya lagu yang direkam di bar sambil mabok-mabokan(cue the guitar distortion). Hell, this is probably the only OASIS’s song yang bisa lu pake buat drunk and tipsy enough but you can still feel the heavy riff and the completely absence of smart thing yang filling up the one for the masses album, WHAT’S THE STORY MORNING GLORY. Damn, entah uda berapa juta kali gue nyanyiin chorusnya, gak bosen2 dan masih sama tendernya kaya pertama kali gue nyanyiin. Let me be the one who shines with you and slides away, baby!

14. RADIOHEAD – FAKE PLASTIC TREES

I always like Radiohead back in my teenage years. Like not love. But after OK COMPUTER, I always thought that they’re too cool buat gue. That’s why gue always trying to find away buat avoiding their record. Mau itu in my Jazz period, or Japanese period, or even in my Indie rock period 4-5 years ago, I always avoiding them. Fake Plastic Trees is a song yang keberadaannya selalu tertutup ama Creep for this past 15 years buat gue. I mean, i know the song, I like the song back then, but I don’t realize it is so goddamn good till couple of years ago. And it is the gateway buat gue finally memasuki dan ngedalemin all those Radiohead record.  Damn, I love this song. Lyricsnya semua non sensical sih. But I feel it. Especially when the song hit the final lyrics, its just like, YORKE got me now with those obsessive teenage coming of age lyrics, why the hell the stupid old me didn’t listen to this art more often back then?? I can have more dark and depressing teenage time back then!

13. THE ROLLING STONES – LOVING CUP

Uda bukan secret lagi kalo gue emang lebih prefer Stones daripada Beatles. In fact, The Rolling Stones is my number one Classic Rock Band of all time. WHY? Because they really put soul into their music. Almost all their amazing track beneran kerasa passionnya. I can dig it. Contohnya, coba dengerin lagu ini. Ada gak lagu Beatles yang sejujur lagu ini dari irama dan melodinya? No offense to the beatles’s fans, but Beatles without substance is mediocre at best. Rasanya susah bener nangkep lagu Beatles emotionally. But Stones can do it easy, without even trying hard going to India looking for some guru. Apa yang bikin Loving Cup ada di list ini selain Soulfulnya? Listen to the goddamn godly old school saloon piano, if you don’t like that, you probably gak punya soul in music taste..

12. SUEDE – THE ASPHALT WORLD

Yep, The Wild Ones is Suede’s magnum opus. The Asphalt World? Ngejabarin alasan-alasan yang bikin The Asphalt World nangkring di list ini bakalan bikin gue makin kerasa sok-sok jadi kritikus musik banget. I don’t wanna do that. This is the kind of song yang harus dirasain dingin dan gelapnya. This is the kind of rock song yang mestinya diliris di taon 60-70an and then become legendary. Lepas dan bebas banget. Gak takut ama bombastic and over the limit. Its like a beautiful Avalanche yang gak mau lu hindarin. One of the best hidden gems ever in the music world..

11. MARVIN GAYE – WHAT’S GOING ON

Timeless classic yang gak perlu penjelasan panjang lebar lagi. Ada satu bait di lagu ini yang udah jadi salah satu filosopi hidup gue.  “But who are they to judge us, simply cos our hair is long….”

10. RADIOHEAD – THERE THERE

Semua orang juga tau kalo Radiohead is one of the greatest rock band of all time. They’re genius. They’re mad. They’re ARTIST. But the words cool itu gak pernah jadi epitome mereka. But there there is a different case. This is the only Radiohead song yang bikin gue ngerasa, “fuck, this is cool”, pertama kali gue dengerin after the song end. Look at the video above. That ending…

9. SUEDE – ANIMAL NITRATE

Ah, cukup memalukan seorang gw bisa baru dengerin this song in, 2014. Lagu Suede paling sexy, velvetly, sekaligus paling gelap dan hopelessly forbidden. The title itself beneran ngegambarin semuanya tentang drugs, sex, violence, and even blind faith. Liat aja Music Videonya. Dark and edgy bener, even buat jaman sekarang. Rumor kalo mereka ngisep cocaine dolo before making that video kyanya bukan rumor lagi deh. Stereogum says, that in the time SUEDE releasing this single, THEY are THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD. And quite frankly, I couldn’t agree more.

8. DAVID BOWIE – ASHES TO ASHES

Bowie pernah ditanya tentang apa arti lagu ini, dia bilang ASHES to ASHES is a nursery song yang isinya about space men becoming junkies. Well, that’s it. I will using this song as a nursery rhymes for my kid in the future. Ashes to Ashes is weird. But good. Ashes to Ashes is a bit unortodox. But Catchy. This new wave/new age weird texture of the song sih yang bikin gue kayanya males ngelepasin my ear dari ngedengerin ni lagu. A bit funky juga sih ni lagu. Aduh, banyak banget ye. This song is a bit of everything deh. Just fuckin’ listen to it..

7. PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION – PURPLE RAIN

What the fuck is up with this song? Gimana caranya sih a brokenhearted love song yang kalo dari liriknya semata kedengeran corny abis kok bisa jadi semacem gospel-psych messiah song yang begitu rewarding, rockin’ banget, dan bikin elu pengen mandi di bawah tinta ungu sambil pegangan tangan ama si Prince, by the time the track end? Dan lagu ini juga jadi bukti kejeniusan, kegilaan dan kepedean si Prince. How come? Dia banyak ngebuka his concert with this song! A fuckin’ 8 minutes medley ballad with a heavy blues/song infused song buat ngebuka opening konser? That’s shows how much confidence this motherfucker have about himself.

6. MICHAEL JACKSON – STRANGER IN MOSCOW

Back in 1997, Before Stranger in Moscow, gue selalu mikir MJ is a very cheerful musician. Semua lagu dia rasanya damai dan give this good cherish feeling. Even when he’s singing a ballad song like She’s out of my life, You’re not alone, here the world, sisi ceria dari MJ masih selalu nongol. Stranger in Moscow give me loneliness. Stranger in Moscow give me this down feeling ke gue yang masih 13 taon yang simply masih kerasa even until now. But, If the 13 year old me yang coli aja mungkin blm ngerti, bisa ngerasain how lonely Michael at that time with all of his public image being flayed and tortured, gimana sekarang? Itulah kerennya Stranger in Moscow. All the harrowing, all the loneliness, all the dark, damp and empty alley is still there. Masih sama gelapnya, masih sama sepinya, dan masih sama beautifulnya.

5. LOVE – ALWAYS SEE YOUR FACE

Apa yang lu rasain pas denger intro guitarnya ni lagu, and then the first verse dengan santai dan mellownya mengalun merdu bener. Manis ye? Padahal inti lagunya lumayan bikin down banget buat orang yang gak bisa lepas2 dari masa lalu. Itulah kerennya lagu ini. This song bisa reach your inner baper mencek2in emosi lu dengan melodi yang renyah dan enak banget. Seakan2 elu lagi makan sendirian di restoran favorit elu yang sumpah elu tergila2 banget,  terus tiba2 mantan dengan suaminya masuk ke restoran itu, ignoring elu terus dia mesra2an jilat2an, dan elu gak bisa keluar dari restoran itu gara2 bayar di awal dan satu juta per porsi. Sumpah, gue uda keabisan kata2 buat nge review ni lagu. UDAH PERINGKAT 5 oi! uda 25 lagu gw ngebacot gak jelas, wajar aja inspirasi gue lama2 udah abis..

4. RADIOHEAD – LET DOWN

What is so good about Let Down? Lyricnya aja agak2 whiny. Si Thom juga kedengeran Lazy banget nyanyi disini dibandingin ama effort dia di lagu-lagu lain. Belom lagi that this is one of those song yang Radiohead aja males maenin di live, because its too complicated and doesn’t worth the effort. It is actually a frickin mess kalo lu seperate all the instrument and vocal. Just listen to that greenwood guitar, agak2 beda kan ama other instrument. But, I don’t know. Gue gak bisa ngejelasin. I can’t explain the goosebump yang selalu gue dapet kalo gue dengerin lagu ini penuh penghayatan. I can’t explain that feeling of dark calmy feeling of sweet depression yet comforting yang gw dapetin setiap kali final verse lagu ini keputer. I can’t explain that feeling of why the hell i put this song in this list padahal lagu ini satu album ama The tourist, Paranoid Android, Exit Music, or even that masterpiece Karma Police. I don’t know. I just love the fuck out of this song..

3. JIMI HENDRIX – VOODOO CHILD(SLIGHT RETURN)

Lagu gila yang ngegabungin blues, rock, magic, voodoo, pyschedelic soul. Siapa lagi selain Hendrix yang able to perform this song with his kinda passion, fire and stone coba? The single greatest guitar solo of all time ada di lagu ini. And don’t forget Hendrix Majestic Vocal.

 

2. THE ROLLING STONES – CAN’T HEAR YOU KNOCKIN’

Jarang banget lagu yang dari detik pertama, uda langsung bisa gue moving my head and ngegelitik jiwa rock and roll gue nun jauh in my black hole heart. But that’s what Keith Richard did with this song. The intro riff gitarnya bisa make you feel the soul of frickin classic rock and roll banget squezzing out from your life. Fuckin Beatles can’t do this kind of masterpiece and music. They don’t have the passion and the guts to do it. And then come the Slow Jam at the end. No offence to Mick Jagger yang tugasnya uda abis di menit ke 3, but the last 4 minutes is feels like heaven for rock fans. The Saxophone, the conga, and then the godly Taylor guitar solo yang unscripted. This is music at its best.
